Atmalogy Book Club: August Edition

Last night we met at Atmalogy and had a great discussion of Gloria Naylor’s magical, mysterious novel Mama Day.

I made these silly bookmarks.
I made these silly bookmarks.

We talked about many themes in the book — myths, traditions, matriarchal societies, the sense of place, personal identity, nature, cultural standards of beauty, time, magic, logic, finding peace, and so much more! I am so grateful to those who came, and I hope to see more of you as the group grows.

There’s just the right glow, like you get from banking a bed of coals before going to sleep on a chilly night. The heat’s bound to flare up and flare down, but it’s gonna burn steady and long.

I LOVED this book, and I hope those of you who read along enjoyed it, too.
Abigail, stop your foolishness. All God got in mind is to send you a hurricane? It ain’t got nothing to do with us, we just bystanders on this earth. Sometimes I think we was only a second thought — and a poor second thought at that.
That brings me to next month’s meeting! It’s set for Monday, September 8 at 6:00 p.m. at Atmalogy. Free parking in front AND rear! The September book choice is Sula by Toni Morrison. This one is more widely available, since Toni Morrison is pretty popular. For you digital readers, I’m pretty sure you can find the eBook.
